These 3 short stories, though separate on their own, are meant
to be read in order. It just shows how the relationship between
Carter and Lucy has progressed over the fifth season.

The stories will also be archived on Michelle Hiley's ER page at:
http://www.hiley.demon.co.uk/er/
The Going Fourth series is a challenge that Michelle put forth to fanfic
authors. The basic rules are to put two ER characters in an elevator that's
headed to the fourth floor, and see what happens. Here's my result.

Thanks for reading!

Lucy tried to stifle her yawn, but failed. She didn't even bother
covering her mouth since she was facing the elevator. Lord, she was
tired. Physically and mentally exhausted. What a horrible day
this had been.

"Hey." A voice broke into her thoughts and she looked up into
Carter's serious face.

"Hi," she said.

"So, what did you think of your first day?"

"Don't ask."

The elevator doors opened and several people walked out. Carter held
the door open for Lucy as she entered.

"Floor?" Carter pressed four for himself.

"I'm going to four too. Meeting a friend who works there."
She leaned back against the wall and sighed briefly.

"The first day is always rough. It can be pretty overwhelming down
there, I know. The ER isn't for everyone."

Lucy regarded Carter through narrowed eyes. "Is that your way of
encouraging me?" She had just found out that he was going to be her
resident, and she wasn't sure if she was happy about it. He was
rather brusque, and oh-so serious. She hadn't seen him smile all day.

"I'm just trying to warn you that it's tough in the ER, that's all.
But hey, you got through today. That says a lot." Carter had mixed
feelings about his new med student. She seemed bright, but she sure
as hell had annoyed him by making that diagnosis with her little computer.
On the other hand, she knew how to start an I.V., so that was something.

"I can be tough," Lucy muttered, almost inaudibly.

Carter almost smiled at that. The elevator dinged and they both got out.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Lucy."

"See you tomorrow." She prayed that tomorrow would be a better day.
