"Going Fourth" (2)

Carter sank down heavily in the chair near the elevators. His shift
was over but he didn't feel like going home yet. There was no way
he could sleep tonight anyway. He decided to go up to the roof.
It was peaceful up there...soothing, in a way, especially at night.

He rose to his feet slowly and pressed the up button. It seemed to
take forever, but the doors finally slid open and he got in.

"Hold the elevator!" a familiar voice called out.

He turned, keeping his finger on the 'open door' button.

A little breathless, Lucy ran in.

"Thanks. Four, please."

"Aren't you going home?" Carter asked, noticing she had her coat on.
He knew her shift was over now too.

"Yeah, I just have to run these up to OB." She waved a stack of forms,
looking at him closely. To put it mildly, he looked awful. "I...heard
about what happened," she said hesitantly. "So, he didn't make it, huh."

Carter shook his head. "No." He spoke so softly that Lucy had to strain
to hear, even though she was standing right beside him. "It should
have been me. I was the one driving. I'm the one that ran over
the kid."

Lucy could see the terrible sadness and guilt in his dark eyes, and her
heart ached for him. She knew he was struggling to maintain his
composure. His eyes were glittering with unshed tears. She wasn't
sure how he would react, but decided to make the offer anyway.
"Listen, uh...I kind of had a bad night myself. You want to just
hang out for a bit and talk?"

Carter blinked, and surprised himself by answering "Sure. I'm going
up to the roof. I'll meet you there?" He suddenly realized that he
didn't want to be alone right now.

The elevator doors opened. "Ok, I won't be long." She gave him a
brief smile and stepped out. "See you up there."
